Think you can guess what the worst city in the world is to be a woman and travel on public transport? Hint: it’s not New York, London, Tokyo or Beijing.
In fact, it’s Bogota. The Columbian capital city, where more than 1.7 million people catch public transport every day, has been revealed as the most dangerous city or women to ride buses and trains, according to a new study by Thomson Reuters Foundation.
The study, which polled 6,555 women and experts from around the world, ranked cities based on their levels of verbal and physical harassment, police presence and feelings of safety at night, as well as public response to crime and the overall safety ratings of the city.
The three worst cities in the world – Bogota, Mexico City and Lima – as well as Buenos Aires, which came in at number six, were all from South America, where 60 per cent of women in major cities say they have been harassed while travelling on public transport.
Delhi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok represented the Asian cities in the top 10 worst cities for women to travel on public transport. Moscow was the most dangerous European city, sitting at number nine on the list.
The safest cities? Surprisingly, New York – whose subway system is efficient and regularly patrolled, but thanks to popular culture carries the reputation of danger – Tokyo, Beijing and London. All four of these cities had the lowest levels of physical and verbal harassment on public transport, and had high levels of police presence and nighttime safety.
