Breaking: a worldwide Prosecco shortage is coming.

This tragic news comes direct from USA Today, who report that a combination of a bad harvest (brought on by too much rainfall last season in Prosecco production areas in Italy) and soaring demand have caused a dearth of everyone’s favourite Italian brunchtime bubbly.

Prosecco sales are up 27% according to news site Italy24. Some 400 million bottles are produced, about 60% of which are exported to thirsty countries including Australia.

But this year’s production won’t yield nearly as much, and Prosecco manufacturers have been forced to put 150,000 hectolitres from their pre-harvest (which are usually held from sale to prevent the market from being flooded with product) to be bottled and sold. Will it be enough to quench the world’s thirst?

We recommend stocking up on the Italian sparkling wine now.
