Gucci And Twitter Host #Chimehack2 To Help End Violence Against Women

Gucci's 'Chime for Change' campaign joined forces with Twitter to host a hackathon in San Francisco on july 12 with the aim of developing solutions for ending violence against women.

The event saw 215 'hackers' work to produce over 45 ideas and was lead by a panel of inspiring women including Alyse Nelson, president and CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, Cindy Southworth, Executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Meghana Rao, a UN trust fund grantee and Deputy Director of Campaigns at Breakthrough, and Jessica Ladd, Co-founder of Sexual Health Innovations.

The panel challenged the audience, made up of engineers, designers, product managers and marketing experts with the task of developing technology solutions to promote safety for girls and women.

"It's the one thing that unites us," Nelson told the audience.

"There is no country that can say that they are free from it. In my opinion, it is the greatest challenge facing the human race."

Some of the winning ideas included a website called “Think Twice for Change,” where women can safely and anonymously send messages to peers warning them of hostile behavior.

While another was a safety app called “ReaXn,” which allows users to send an alert message to someone without taking their mobile device out of their pocket.

“Chime for Change aims to realise a world where girls and women have the safety and protection they need to thrive, and Chimehack 2 is an opportunity to foster the innovation needed to make a difference on this issue,” Robert Triefus, Gucci’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, said in a press release.

Chime for Change, Gucci's global campaign co-founded by Salma Hayek and Beyonce Knowles which aims to raise funds and awareness for girls and women around the world, first teamed with Twitter for Chimehack back in December 2013.
