Emma Watson Threatened Following Feminism Speech
Following Emma Watson's amazing speech on the importance of gender equality yesterday, the actress has received several appalling online threats.
Reports from Gawker indicate that a website has been set up with the title 'Emma You Are Next', along with the words, 'never forget, the biggest to come thus far.'
While the basis of the threats is unclear, a clock counting down to four days from now indicates the actress may be the target of an imminent online attack.
It's suspected hackers may be planning to reveal photos from Watson's phone after she spoke out in defense of the celebrities targeted by hackers recently.
"Even worse than seeing women's privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such a lack of empathy," the actress tweeted at the time.
Even more alarmingly, comments on the website directly link her UN speech to the hacking.
"She makes stupid feminist speeches at UN, and now her nudes will be online," commented one user.
Watson was heralded yesterday for her heartfelt speech on what it means to be a feminist, and why men need to join the conversation on gender equality.
"I am reaching out to you because we need your help," Watson began. "We must try to mobilise as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change. We don't just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure it's tangible."
Watson said that despite popular belief, being a feminist wasn't about being aggressive, or anti-men, or unattractive.
"I decided that I was a feminist," the actress aid. "This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists.
"Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men."
