Sheryl Sandberg And Beyonce Want To Ban The Word “Bossy”

When you think of the word “bossy”, what comes to mind? Someone who is overbearing, stubborn and forthright? It certainly doesn’t conjure up a positive connotation does it?

Which is why Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, wants to ban the use of the term in the workplace.

Instead, Sandberg believes the terms “feminist” and “executive leadership skills” should take its place in an effort to encourage women to take the lead at work without feeling like they’re being branded with a negative term.

Sandberg is blasting the message from her non-profit organization, LeanIn.org, and she’s not the only one: Beyonce, Jane Lynch and Jennifer Garner are just a few of the Hollywood celebrities showing their support for their cause.

“Being labeled something, matters,” says Jennifer Garner.

“Be brave. Be you. I’m not bossy. I’m the boss,” adds Beyonce.

The Lean In website is filled with stories and quotes regarding the issue, with Sandberg encouraging conversation via the hashtag #banbossy.

"We need to recognize the many ways we systematically discourage leadership in girls from a young age — and instead, we need to encourage them," Sandberg said in a statement. "So the next time you have the urge to call your little girl bossy? Take a deep breath and praise her leadership skills instead."
