Mark Zuckerberg To Donate 99% Of His Facebook Shares (Worth $US45 Billion) To Charity

Today has been a big day for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Not only did Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan announce the birth of their daughter, Max, but they’ve also launched a joint charity: the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

To kick things off, the couple promised to contribute 99% of their combined Facebook shares, which are worth approximately $US45 billion, to the initiative.

The mission of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is to advance human potential and promote equality.

Mark and Priscilla made the announcement via an open letter to their daughter on Facebook.

“Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future… Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.”

The couple will share more details on the charity in the coming months. Right now, they’re busy getting to know their daughter.
