Jimmy Fallon is the king of celebrity skits – he’s danced with Will Smith, lip-synced with Emma Stone and missed out on a date with Nicole Kidman – but when it comes to his latest viral clip, the biggest star was a humble pot of Vegemite.
The talk show host was challenged by two child viewers from Australia to try our nation’s greatest delicacy. But it was his sidekick and co-host Steve Higgins who dived in first.
“Let’s throw a shrimp on the Barbie,” Higgins said as he took a bite of Vegemite-laden bread (Rookie error: never over-spread the Vegemite. Never.)
Higgins’ reaction was priceless: a look of disgust mixed with that involuntary muscle spasm when you eat something too salty.
“I think it’s not for the American palate. I’m sure it’s delicious in Australia,” Higgins said, recovering.
Next up it was Fallons’ turn. Holding the bread up to the camera – “Looks like something you wanna eat,” he said dubiously, to which Higgins responded “It looks like Nutella gone bad!” – Fallon gingerly took a bite from the bread.
A brief pause, a gag and then uncontrollable laughter. It’s official: Jimmy Fallon does not like Vegemite.
“Not good,” he said.
“It tastes like beef bouillon that fell on a brewer’s floor,” Higgins agreed.
