It's Official: Jada Pinkett Smith Is Boycotting The Oscars Over Lack Of Diversity

Update: it's official: Jada Pinkett Smith will not be attending the Oscars.

In a video update on Facebook, the actress said she would not even watch the Academy Awards on television due to the blatant lack of diversity.

"Today is Martin Luther King's birthday, and I can't help but ask the question: Is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?" she said.

"Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a dignified people, and we are powerful. So let's let the Academy do them, with all grace and love. And let's do us, differently."

Jada PInkett Smith has spoken out about the lack of diversity in the 2016 Oscars nominations.

Similarly, filmmaker Spike Lee said he would also be boycotting the Oscars.

"We cannot support it and [I] mean no disrespect ... But, how is it possible for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the acting category are white? And let's not even get into the other branches," Lee wrote on Instagram. "Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all. We can't act?! WTF!!"

Original story: Jada Pinkett Smith is outraged at the lack of diversity in this year's Oscar nominations and she's letting her feelings be known.

The 44-year-old actress took to her Facebook and Twitter page to voice her opinion on the fact that no actors of colour have been nominated for an Academy Award this year - the second in a row that only white actors have been acknowledged.

“At the Oscars, people of colour are always welcomed to give out awards, even entertain, but we are rarely recognised for our artistic accomplishments,” she noted online.

“Should people of colour refrain from participating all together?”

“People can only treat us in the way in which we allow,” the Gotham star added.

“With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment, J.”

The internet erupted last week when Will Smith, Idris Elba, Samuel L. Jackson and Ice Cube's Straight Outta Compton were snubbed by the Academy.

Tweeters used the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite to vent their frustration, with stars such as Don Cheadle, Emmy Rossum and Rashida Jones also speaking out.
