Taylor Swift A Feminist ‘Because Of Lena Dunham’
Say what you will about Taylor Swift, but she's definitely got the right idea when it comes to feminism.
The 24-year old recently admitted she'd never thought much about the concept in the past, but has since embraced feminism after realising she believes in everything it stands for.
The acclaimed singer attributes her friendship with Girls creator Lena Dunham for her new mindset, saying, "Becoming friends with Lena - without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for - has made me realize that I've been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so."
Swift said that as a teenager, she didn't understand the definition of feminism and was therefore scared of talking about it.
"What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men," Swift explained in an interview with the Guardian this week. "And now, I think a lot of girls have had a feminist awakening because they understand what the word means. For so long it's been made to seem like something where you'd picket against the opposite sex, whereas it's not about that at all."
Her words are in stark contrast to fellow singer Lana Del Rey, who recently said she was "bored" by the whole idea of feminism.
"Whenever people bring up feminism, I'm like, god. I'm just not really that interested," Del Rey told Fader magazine. "I'm more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what's going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities."
Perhaps Del Rey needs to check out the Confused Cats Against Feminism Tumblr page...
