Jackie Frank Talks Australian Designers In New York
It's no secret that this season's New York Fashion Week has seen the most Australian designer showings since 2008.
Sass & Bide, Dion Lee, Zimmermann, Rebecca Vallance and TOME have all made a splash with their collections, firmly putting Australia on the map when it comes to setting trends and cutting-edge fashion.
As marie claire’s editor/publisher, Jackie Frank, explains, New York Fashion Week A/W 2014 clearly demonstrates the breadth of talent we have.
“It’s a fantastic year for Aussie designers,” commented Frank. “There’s been quite a few different shows and we’ve shown the breadth of design we have.
“We really know how to dress women and I’ve been really proud this week.”
Sass & Bide showed their Novateur collection overnight, with Sarah-Jane Clarke, Brand Director, explaining the inspiration behind their latest look.
“This season for us is all about the cocoon shape, so we did some metallic cocoons via the skirts and also the floating tops,” explained Clarke.
Meanwhile, the brand’s creative director, Heidi Middleton, said Sass & Bide’s foray into the international market had been a lengthy process.
“We’ve just been building over time, and we opened our first international flagship a few months ago,” explained Middleton. “The vision and the strategy (of the brand) is really clear now.”
As for Zimmermann, Frank said the brand’s designer, Nicky Zimmermann, had taken inspiration from a photo of her parents from the 1950s.
“There was a lot of rockabilly and swing in this collection,” said Frank. “It was a little bit of a departure; a bit more hard-edged than what they usually do.”
Likewise, Rebecca Vallance toughened things up by giving her feminine aesthetic a masculine twist.
“I was impressed, she’s known for her feminine look and this time she took a lot of inspiration from man styling and gave it that feminine twist.
There’s a lot of choice over here: great news for all us Aussies who want to go shopping!” said Frank.
