These days we can choose to wear as little or as much makeup as we like, however from the days of Ancient Egypt, through to the middle ages and the early 1900s, women were expected to conform to society's standards.
Watch as makeup artist and author Lisa Eldridge explains the biggest trends through the years and how women achieved the looks, and how it has led us to enjoy the freedom that we have today.
Eldridge, who is a YouTube sensation with over 1.2 million subscribers, conducted the research as part of her new book, Face Paint: The Story of Makeup, which details a history of cosmeticsm the women behind them, and the sometimes dangerous methods they would go to to wear it.

"This is something I’ve always wanted to write," says Eldridge.
"Getting the cover right was a very long and tricky process. It needed to represent thousands of years of painterly history, capturing the textures, the powders, the paints - but at the same time I wanted it to look modern and striking."
