How To Treat Skin Dehydration At Every Age

20s
Dehydration is either situational (e.g. cold air) or due to your skin type. "It's not so much about visibility, but more a feeling - a tight sensation, like the skin is too small for the face," explains Edouard Mauvais-Jarvis, Dior's scientific communications director.
What to do: Stay hydrated. "Use a soap-free cleanser, and moisturise twice a day with a formula suited to your level of dryness," advises Dr Shobhan Manoharan, laser and cosmetic dermatologist at Brisbane Skin and Westside Dermatology.
Try: Nivea Pure & Natural Soothing Day Cream, $12.99; Natio Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser, $14.95.

30s
"Like the 20s, dehydration at this age is either situational or linked to innate dryness, plus your skin can start to take on a scaly texture," says Mauvais-Jarvis. "The ageing process has also begun, with fine lines and wrinkles often making their first appearance, which tends to alter the quality of skin and make it less springy."
What to do: "A topical retinoid is a good starting point," says Dr Manoharan. "For dynamic wrinkles and lines, you can start using Botox in small doses to prevent more severe and permanent wrinkles."
Try: Dior Capture Totale Le Serum, $215; StriVectin-AR Advanced Retinol Eye Treatment, $86.

40s
By this age, dehydration not only presents itself as fine lines and wrinkles, but also as a lack of tissue in the skin, which can lead to reduced volume, says Mauvais-Jarvis.
What to do: "I usually recommend products that contain vitamins A, B and C," says Dr Manoharan. "Alpha hydroxy acids in lower concentrations at home, or higher concentrations at clinics, are also ideal to help improve and maintain skin tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkling."
Try: Lancome Renergie Multi-Lift Reviva Plasma, $142; Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Eye Cream, $96.

50+
Any dehydration experienced in your 40s will be amplified, notes Mauvais-Jarvis. But even those who have never experienced dehydration are likely to encounter it now due to menopause or "the skin's natural barrier becoming less stable over time. This leads not only to dryness, but irritation and inflammation, as well," explains Dr Manoharan.
What to do: Increase the application of a moisturiser and use richer formulas to deeply nourish the skin.
Try: Chanel Sublimage Masque Essential Regenerating Mask (below), $285; SK-II Stempower Eye Cream, $149.
