Shire Police Area Command Superintendent Craig Middleton described the alleged fatal assault as “terrible”.

“The security guard is just going about his business and there are patrons in there having a good time … and the security guard has ended up losing his life,” he said.

“It’s just a tragedy all around. For the families involved, for the people at the hotel, for the emergency services.

“There are no winners in this situation.”

Police have notified Mr Al-Zaher’s family, who live overseas, about his death.

On Monday, floral tributes were laid outside the Royal Hotel in honour of the late security guard.
