Ryan Williams, a 29-year-old postman from England spent between $26 and $36 a day on McDonald’s, eating every product on the menu at least once throughout the month.
He explained to followers on his YouTube channel, Ry, that he would be taking the 30 day challenge to follow in the footsteps of ‘Super Size Me’ director Morgan Spurlock, who also ate McDonald’s for a month for a social experiment, and gained two stone.
Ryan decided to try to do the challenge ‘in reverse’, eating McDonald’s like Morgan but managing to lose weight in the process.
He wrote in a caption for a video post: “Instead of gauging on 5,000+ calories a day with no exercise, I aim to get in shape whilst eating a McDonalds ONLY diet!”
“Throughout the 30 days, I’ll be in a slight calorie deficit, training at least 5x a week along with an active job & lifestyle.”
Ryan started off by eating 2,500 calories for a day – the recommended daily calorie intake for a man – dropping down to 2,300 half way through the challenge. In the final weeks, he furthered lowered his calorific intake.
He lost a total of 16 pounds through his 30 day challenge, plus three per cent of his body fat.
He said: “Prior to the challenge I was probably in the worst state I’d been in in a few years.
“My diet wasn’t great, I would eat a lot of food – about 5,000 calories – in a day, lots of biscuits and junk food, and I wasn’t going to the gym at all.
“Before that, for about 10 years, I was always very active and went to the gym four or five times a week.
“So for me, this challenge was partly about what I could do to help myself get back to that, whilst also having a bit of fun.”
