Rebecca Sneed still supports her ex, Lyle Menendez, by running his social media accounts

Lyle Menendez and his wife, Rebecca Sneed, quietly ended their marriage after more than 21 years together, but she remains a key figure in his life despite rumors of a cheating scandal Sneed says are baseless, PEOPLE has learned.

"Lyle and Rebecca have been broken up for a while," a source with knowledge of the situation told PEOPLE, adding that Sneed still supports her ex by running his social media accounts and assisting in his ongoing legal battles.

The source also addressed Lyle’s romantic relationship with Milly Bucksey, a 21-year-old college student from Manchester, England. The source says Lyle and Bucksey became involved after she wrote him in prison, but she has “only visited him once in jail.”

Reports about Lyle and Bucksey's romance surfaced earlier this month, prompting Sneed to issue a statement confirming her separation from Lyle. She posted the update on a Facebook page she manages for him.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. They have consistently maintained that the killings were an act of self-defense following years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of Jose, which they say Kitty enabled.
