Lucy Hale Says She Feels 'Sad' to Be Removing Her Tattoos Even Though They 'Weren't Thought Through' (Exclusive Clip)

The 'Pretty Little Lies' actress opens up about the removal process on the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast

Lucy Hale is opening up about her tattoo journey.

In the Tuesday, March 4, episode of the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, the actress, 35, explained the reasons she's having several of her tattoos removed.

"It does take a lot to cover them for acting, and a lot of my characters don't have tattoos," Hale tells host Amanda Hirsch in an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE. "So it's more time in the makeup chair. But also, I just feel like I've changed so much in the last couple of years, that it almost feels like the tattoos don't fit who I am anymore."

The Pretty Little Liars alum admits that it's "kind of sad because tattoos tell a story," but that some of her tattoos were "poorly done and weren't really thought through."

"At one point in my life I had, like, 22 tattoos," she adds. "Which is crazy."

In 2021, Hale revealed that she planned on removing a small tattoo of the sun on the left side of her torso that she previously got with her sister, Maggie Clarke.

She shared the news in a series of photos posted on her Instagram Stories in honor of her older sister's birthday. One of the snaps showed Hale lifting up her shirt to reveal the sun tattoo, which matched one seen on Maggie's right wrist.

In another Instagram Stories post, Hale said she'd be keeping another matching tattoo with her sister: one on her wrist that says "I love you."

In 2017, the actress told Rue Now that she and Maggie got the matching sun tattoos as a tribute to their late grandmother. "I have a little, tiny sun that I got with my sister in honor of our grandmother," she explained to the outlet at the time.

Hale has a number of other tiny tattoos, including a tribute to her dog Elvis, and the number sequence — "14, 16, 20" — a nod to her sister's three children Glenys, Lula, and Oliver.
