Golden Globes winners and losers as Nicole Kidman laughs off Keith Urban joke

There was joy for Shōgun and Emilia Pérez, but it wasn't a good night for the Aussies.

Yahoo's live coverage of the 2025 Golden Globes has concluded.. We brought you all the dazzling red carpet looks as well as the big winners and losers of the night as awards season officially kicks off. There were some big Aussie names up for awards this year including Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Guy Pearce. Sadly for them, they walked away empty handed.

American comedian Nikki Glaser became the first woman to host the Golden Globes by herself and was praised for her performance.

    Host's savage Keith Urban joke

    Host Nikki Glaser has delivered her opening address at the Golden Globes and she's taken a pop at plenty of the big names present.

    And of course there was a Nicole Kidman joke in there, with Glaser thanking husband Keith Urban for playing guitar around the house all the time, forcing Kidman to leave home and go make movies.

    The A-list couple enjoyed the gag and were both seen laughing thankfully.

  • No Aussie winners on the night

    There was plenty of optimism heading into the Golden Globes for the Australian contingent but sadly they walked away empty handed.

    Plenty thought Nicole Kidman would win Best Female Actor - Drama for her role in Babygirl but she was beaten by Fernanda Torres.

    And while Guy Pearce's The Brutalist had a strong night, he missed out on Best Supporting Male Actor to Kieran Culkin.

    Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts were both nominated for Best Female Actor in a limited/anthology TV series category but that was won by Jodie Foster.

    And Director-writer Adam Elliot was in the running for Best Film - Animated for Memoir of a Snail but lost toFlow.

  • Who won the most Golden Globes?

    Let's have a recap of the big winners tonight.

    Shōgun won all four of its nominations in an impressive clean sweep.

    Emilia Pérez won four of its 10 nominations, including Best picture — Musical/Comedy,

    The Brutalist won three awards, including Best Picture - Drama.

    Baby Reindeer won two awards, as did Hacks.

    The Bear had the most TV nominations with five, but only walked away with one award.

  • Karla Sofía Gascón: 'I am who I am, not who you want'

    After Emilia Pérez took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, the film's star Karla Sofía Gascón delivered a powerful speech to close the night.

    Gascón, who made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated as a lead actress for a film at the Golden Globes, began with a heartfelt and uplifting message: "The light always wins over darkness."

    She went on to honor the resilience of the trans community, saying, "You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, our existence, our identity. I want to say to you: Raise your voice ... and say, 'I am who I am, not who you want.'"

  • Big winner's lengthy run time

    If you're wanting to watch best drama winner The Brutalist, be prepared. It's a whopping three-and-a-half hours long.

    The film, starring Aussie Guy Pearce, is so long it screens with an interval.

    Adrien Brody plays the lead character, a Holocaust survivor named László Tóth. And as host Nikki Glaser pointed out earier, he has history in such a role.

    In 2003, he became the youngest winner of the Best Actor at the Oscars for his role as a Holocaust survivor in The Pianist.

  • Special 25-year detail for winner

    Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, who stars in I'm Still Here, dedicated her award for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama to her mother, who attended the Golden Globe Awards as a nominee.

    "I want to dedicate [the award] to my mother," Torres said in her speech, referring to Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated for her role in the 1998 film Central Station. "You have no idea, she was here 25 years ago."

    She added that this is "proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments."

    Torres was the second Brazilian actress to be nominated for a Golden Globe, while her mother was the first, according to the Golden Globes.

  • Main awards handed out

    It's jubilation for those behind The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez who have claimed the big two awards at the end of the night.

    The former won Best Motion Picture in the Drama category, while the latter claimed the Musical or Comedy equivalent.

  • Shōgun sweeps Golden Globes with four wins

    The Golden Globes are adding up for Shōgun, with the hit show reaching to four for the night.

    Anna Sawai has won Best Acress in a drama television series while the show won Best drama series.

    Earlier in the night, Tadanobu Asano won best supporting male actor and Hiroyuki Sanada won best actor in a television series.

    The show converted all four of its nominations into wins.

  • Nicole Kidman misses out

    We've just had two of the big awards handed out and it's an unfortunately bad news for those hoping for a Nicole Kidman win.

    She was beaten by Fernanda Torres in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama category. She won for her performance in I'm Still Here.

    And Adrien Brody has won the the male equivalent for his performance in The Brutalist, beating Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Craig, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastian Stan.

  • Family overwhelmed with Demi Moore's first win

    There were just three words from Demi Moore's daughter after she won her first Golden Globe at 62.

    "SHE DID IT," Scout Willis wrote online alongside a host of crying emojis.

    She shared video of her family watching on as her name was announced, sending them into joyous celebrations.

    Her sister Rumer added to the post, saying she was "so, so proud" of Moore.

  • Elton John makes eyesight joke

    Elton John has made light of his recent sight issues by jokingly introducing co-host Brandi Carlile as Rihanna. He recently announced he's lost sight in his right eye, prompting concern from fans.

    "I want to reassure everybody it's not as bad as it seems, so I'm so pleased to be here with my co-host Rihanna," he said, prompting laughter from the audience.

    Elton John erupted with delight when Carlile revealed Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won Best Original Score for a Motion Picture for Challengers.

  • Demi Moore emotional with first big win

    Demi Moore held back tears as she hailed what she called her first major win in her 45-year career. She won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for her role in The Substance.

    The 62-year-old has had two other individual nominations at the Golden Globes, the first coming in 1991 for Ghost. She has never been nominated for an Oscar.

    She said the win was a reminder she "does belong" in the industry.

    "Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me I was a popcorn actress, and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn't something I was allowed to have," she said. "That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn't be acknowledged. And I bought in and I believed that," she recalled.

    The iconic Oscar winner won the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for her performance in True Detective: Night Country.

  • Winner's speech translated on stage

    The Best Motion Picture that's Non-English Language has gone to Emilia Pérez and the most nominated film is gaining momentum. Director Jacques Audiard needed a translator to deliver his acceptance speech as he declared "I don't speak English".

  • The Bear wins first award

    The most nominated TV show The Bear has won its first Golden Globe.

    Jeremy Allen White, who sadly couldn't be present, won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy.

    He beat Adam Brody, Ted Danson, Steve Martin, Jason Segel and Martin Short to the win. Now that's an impressive shortlist.

  • Star's manicure takes five hours

    Wicked star Cynthia Erivo showed off her impressive nails earlier which took a remarkable five hours to complete.

    The actress is nominated for her performance in the adapted musical and told E! News she "always" has some green on her.

  • Baby Reindeer star's cheeky joke

    Netflix's hugely successful Baby Reindeer has its first win.

    English star Jessica Gunning has won Best Supporting Female Actor for her iconic role as Martha in the show.

    She began her speech with an X-rated joke as she stumbled up the steps to the stage.

    "You nearly saw my Golden Globes there," she said, prompting laughs from the audience.

    She went on to say how the show had changed her life and offered her thanks to its creator Richard Gadd.

  • First win for Shogun

    Hiroyuki Sanada has claimed Shōgun's first win of the night with the veteran actor urging young hopefuls not to give up on their big screen dreams.

    "Please be yourself, believe in yourself, and never give up. Good luck," the 64-year-old said.

    Zoe Saldaña has won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her role in Emilia Pérez.

    She struggled to hold off tears as she delivered a lengthy acceptance speech that went for so long that her allotted time ran out and music played over the top. She tried to tell them to stop the music, but was awkwardly unsuccessful.

  • Who are the favourites to win big?

    Awards season has just begun, so there's no clear frontrunner for the major movie categories, though a few dominated the nominations.

    Emilia Pérez has the most nods with 10. The Spanish-language musical crime comedy is nominated for the top prize in the musical/comedy category. Its lead and supporting actresses Karla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez also received nominations.

    The two most-nominated films in the drama category are The Brutalist, a sprawling immigrant story with seven nods, and Conclave, a surprisingly action-packed film about the process of selecting a new pope with six nods.

    After winning Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys, Shōgun, a historical epic set in 1600s Japan, is a likely favorite for the Golden Globe as well. Its stars, Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, are also up for two of the show's four nominations.

    She wore it last year at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival premiere of her film Rumours.

    Blanchett is known for upcycling her red carpet looks — switching out small details in the ensembles to freshen them up.

  • Pamela Anderson among first-time nominees

    Another household name fans are loving is Pamela Anderson. The former Baywatch star has spoken a lot recently about her decision to embrace the natural look and her move away from make-up.

    Anderson, 57, is one of several first-time nominees and she is nominated for her performance in The Last Showgirl.

    Among the 26 first-time nominees is Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is also the first transgender woman to receive a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.

    Well it's fair to say Nicole Kidman's outfit has been a big hit.

    She took to Instagram just minutes ago to share a few shots of her sparking dress and fans can't get enough.

    "Out of this world," one fan said of the 57-year-old.

    Nicole Kidman is here and we've just seen her gatecrash a Ewan McGregor interview in what Entertainment Tonight host Rachel smith called a true "Hollywood moment".

    The Moulin Rouge stars embraced as Kidman pointed out McGregor's daughter Esther is her co-star in Babygirl.

    Reflecting on the moment after, Smith said she was overwhelmed with the interaction.

    "Can someone just pinch me now?" she asked.

  • Fans loving velvet outfit

    Well this is bit of a different look and it's going down well with fans online.

    Succession's Jeremy Strong went for a velvet suit hat combo and a pair of matching sunnies.

    There's a bit of debate about whether the outfit's green or blue, but one things for certain, it's been a big hit online.

    "Absolute slay," one fan said on X.

    The star is nominated for his role in The Apprentice.

    The red carpet is in full swing now and we have plenty of nominees coming through.

    Glenn Powell is here with his parents, while the millennials reading will be pleased to know Adam Brody is here.

  • Glen Powell, Timothée Chalamet lookalikes make red carpet debut

    What's the prize for winning a celebrity lookalike contest? Attending the Golden Globes, apparently.

    The winners of the Glen Powell and Timothée Chalamet lookalike contests — Max Braunstein and Miles Mitchell — arrived with signs at as they hit the Golden Globes red carpet.

    These two are among the many who have gained notoriety from contests that are finding doppelgängers for various celebrities, from Gordon Ramsay to Zendaya.

    Australian actress Cate Blanchett has arrived and is in a rather fitting golden dress.

    The 55-year-old is wearing a Luis Vuitton column gown and paired with golden shoes.

    Blanchett is nominated for best performance by a female actor in a limited series for Disclaimer and as mentioned earlier she has won four Golden Globes previously.

  • Aubrey Plaza not expected at awards after husband's death

    We now take you to the tragic news from the weekend where Aubrey Plaza's husband was found dead at their LA home.

    Jeff Baena, 47, was pronounced dead at the home by authorities and police are not treating his death as suspicious.

    Plaza is scheduled to present at the Golden Globes, however the Daily Mail is reporting it is now highly unlikely that will happen.

    The actress earned her first Golden Globes nomination last year for her role in hit TV series White Lotus.

  • Red carpet kicks off

    Stars are now appearing on the red carpet and here's some of the first outfits we're getting a look at.

    Actress Heather McMahan has caught the eye with this interesting purple number, while model and TV host Ashley Graham has dazzled in a plunging black dress.

    Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness has garnered plenty of love online for his green dress.

  • Hugh Jackman not attending despite success

    Another Aussie who stars in a blockbuster up for an award today is Hugh Jackman. But according to Deadline, he will not be in attendance alongside co-star Ryan Reynolds.

    The A-listers were the stars of Deadpool & Wolverine, which was a huge success and brought in more than A$2 billion. The film has one Golden Globe nomination in the category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

  • Host Nikki Glaser makes history

    Host Nikki Glaser has arrived on the red carpet of the 82nd Golden Globes.

    The 40-year-old comedian will make history as the first ever woman to solo host the awards. Sandra Oh, Amy Pohler and Tina Fey have hosted the Golden Globes but they shared the duties.

    Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne has given Glaser freedom to touch on "whatever she wants".

    "She doesn't run anything by us. I don't even get to hear anything ahead of the show, it's really all up to her," Hoehne told Yahoo.

  • Where can I watch the Golden Globes?

    We're not far off now as guests start to head to the red carpet, which officially begins at 10am AEDT.

    The ceremony will kick off an hour later and can be watched in Australia on Channel 10. It can also be streamed on Paramount+.
