Listed former Ilkeston cinema to be converted to gym

A listed Derbyshire building which has been targeted by vandals is set to be converted into a gym.

The former Ritz cinema and bingo hall, on the corner of South Street and Coronation Street in Ilkeston, has stood empty for six years.

The building was Grade-II listed due to it being a "remarkably complete example of a fine cinema of the 1930s".

Planners have given the go ahead as, despite alterations, the conversion will help preserve the main structure.

Built in 1938, the Ritz cinema operated until 1968, with a capacity of 1,400 customers.

Erewash Borough Council had identified it as a focal point for the town's redevelopment but a bid for government money failed, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Stage removed

The plans, from Parliament House Limited, said the conversion into a gym would "help secure the long-term future of the building" and "inject additional life and commerce in the immediate area through a much-welcomed increase in local footfall".

The firm also said it had a tenant ready to move into the building.

As part of the conversion, the existing stage and refreshment kiosk would be removed while the glazed screen between the former café and main auditorium would be partially removed.

A report from borough council planning officials, approving the scheme, said: "The proposed use is considered to be sympathetic to the listed building's original purpose and design in principle.

"By putting the building back to use it will contribute to its upkeep, longevity, and positive perception of its contribution to Ilkeston's built and cultural history.

"Bringing the building back into use as soon as possible is very important for its continued viability."
