Lily Collins’ Husband Addresses ‘Unkind Messages’ Following Surprise Baby News
Lily Collins and her husband, Charlie McDowell, surprised fans this past weekend when they announced they had welcomed their first child.
But instead of being met with no-strings-attached support, it appears the Emily in Paris star and her husband have been receiving enough "unkind messages" that the film director and screenwriter felt the need to address it.
On Friday, the duo–who have been married since 2021–revealed they were now parents, announcing the birth of their daughter, Tove Jane McDowell, in a joint Instagram post, which featured an adorable photo of the newborn relaxing in her carrier.
Though many of the responses to the Jan. 31 upload were well-intentioned and celebratory, as several other commenters pointed out, some were "atrocious" as they questioned the couple's decision to use a surrogate.
"What gives you the right to judge," another fan added, slamming some of the very intrusive comments.
Eventually, McDowell issued his own response to the "unkind messages" and "hateful words."
"Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful," the 41-year-old began his response. "In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby— it’s ok to not be an expert on surrogacy."
"It’s ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world," McDowell continued, "especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives."
"That’s all for now," the Windfall director concluded, joking about one of the responsibilities of his new role as a dad, "because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper."
