Study Says Expensive Engagement Ring Equals Divorce
We all watched with baited breath as Samantha Frost accepted Blake Garvey's $58,000 engagement ring on The Bachelor - and was then dumped by the reality TV star a mere few weeks later.
Now, a new study says the correlation between their engagement and the ring might reveal more about their relationship than first thought.
Aptly titled "'A Diamond is Forever" the US study found a direct correlation between the amount of money a man spends on an engagement ring and the quality of the relationship.
Those who spent between $2,000 - $4,000 (AU $2,500 - $4,500) on an engagement ring were 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than those who spent between $500 - $2000 (AU $550- $2500).
In addition, women who spent more than $20,000 on a wedding were three times as likely to get divorced.
The overall conclusion? The researchers behind the study said it "provided little evidence to support the validity of the wedding industry's general message that connects expensive weddings with positive marital outcomes."
Eek.
On the flipside, men who spent under $500 on an engagement ring were also likely to get divorced, so take from that what you will.
