Legendary Golfer Bobby Jones’s Former Atlanta Mansion Can Be Yours for $9.8 Million

Way back in the 1930s, soon after he had put up his shingle as a professional attorney, amateur golfer Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones Jr. capped off a 14-year playing career by achieving a Grand Slam, a feat that consisted of winning the era’s four major championships in the same year. He went on to retire from competition at the height of his career and then settled down in a home that was gifted to him by the city of Atlanta as a reward for his success on the links.

Though Jones passed away in December 1971 at age 69—and was laid to rest at a local cemetery in a grave scattered with golf balls regularly left by his adoring fans—that historic residence still stands in the tony Tuxedo Park neighborhood of Buckhead. Fully renovated a few months ago for an appearance in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine’s Homes for the Holidays Showhouse, the classic Colonial-style abode just popped up on the market for a stroke under $9.8 million.

“The new owners of 3488 Tuxedo are going to have an incredibly stylish, meticulously expanded and modernized home, and a legendary story to tell,” says listing agent Bonneau Ansley of Ansley Real Estate at Christie’s International Real Estate. “Imagine having cocktails in your speakeasy and study, where the legendary Bobby Jones dreamed up Augusta National and the Masters Tournament. An extraordinary piece of Atlanta history.”

Last sold in spring 2024 for $2.6 million to Brown Trout Development LLC, according to Atlanta Business Chronicle, and subsequently transformed by a team that included Firelight Homes, Tish Mills Interiors, and Kirk Designs, the white brick-clad structure is tucked away on a 1.6-acre parcel of land laced with mature trees. A gated driveway adorned with the original pavers leads to a motor court and a new three-car garage, and double front doors open into 7,500 square feet of two-level living space boasting five bedrooms and nine baths.

Among the main-level highlights is a black and white tiled entrance gallery, which leads to formal living and dining rooms. A fireside family room connects to an eat-in kitchen outfitted with the latest Wolf range and a prep pantry, while a study clad in century-old refurbished red oak paneling flows to a speakeasy finished in green lacquer, and a vaulted primary suite features a marble bath flaunting a sauna, a steam shower, and a cantilevered soaking tub.

Additional bedrooms and baths can be found upstairs, while the terrace level sports a billiards room, a wine cellar, a golf simulator, a gym, and access to grassy grounds hosting a sundeck-encased pool and spa flanked by an open-air cabana. In a special nod to Jones, there’s even a practice green replicating Augusta National’s No. 12 hole that’s part of the course’s iconic “Amen Corner.”

Despite being a lifelong amateur, Jones won the Southern Open in 1930 and proceeded to complete a Grand Slam that year by also capturing the British Amateur, British Open, U.S. Open, and U.S. Amateur championships.
