Kylie Minogue has opened up about her ‘doomed’ romance with Michael Hutchence, and why he was a ‘broken man’ when it finally came to an end.

The musical power couple first got together in 1989 and dated for more than 18 months — at a time when both were riding high on the international charts.

But just six years later, Michael took his own life in a Sydney hotel room, after several more romances and a long battle with depression.

Now, the pop princess has opened up about the pair’s fast-paced and high profile union, ahead the release of the new documentary: Mystify: Michael Hutchence.

“(It) felt loving, yet said, but was probably doomed,” Minogue says looking back on the relationship.

The film features previously unseen footage from the era and details Michael’s extremely emotional response after he decided to end the pair’s relationship.

This reaction is said to have included Michael collapsing on the floor in a heap and weeping for hours.

"Was it work, was it the drugs? I don't know. He was like a broken man," she said.

Following the break-up, Michael began a four-year relationship with Danish supermodel Helena Christensen, who also features in the documentary.

Later in 1992, he was assaulted by a taxi driver in Copenhagen and sustained a traumatic brain injury, which Helena said altered the star’s life dramatically.

This was compounded when Michael initially refused medical treatment and ultimately also lost his sense of smell.

“He (Michael) was unconscious and there was blood coming out of his mouth and ear,” Helena said of the injuries’ impact.

“I thought he was dead. We got to the hospital and he woke up and was aggressive. They were trying to make him stay but he was physically pushing them away.”

The couple eventually parted ways in 1995, soon before Michael’s relationship when a then-married Paula Yates was exposed by the British press.

Their daughter, Tiger Lily was born in July 1996, 16 months before Michael was found dead at the Ritz-Carlton in Sydney, aged just 37.
