Kristen Bell admits her kids drink non-alcoholic beer: 'Judge me if you want'

"I'm not doing anything wrong."

Kristen Bell has baffled some fans after admitting her kids enjoy drinking non-alcoholic beer.

The Frozen star appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show where she revealed the story behind why her daughters Lincoln, ten, and Delta, eight, like the drink.

"My kids have ordered nonalcoholic beers at restaurants before, which sounds insane if you don't know," Kristen told Kelly, adding that "context is important".

She explained that when the girls were young, they'd go on nightly walks as a family with husband Dax Shepard, "He's a recovering addict, but he likes nonalcoholic beer, so he'd pop one open, he'd have [Lincoln] on his chest, and we'd walk and look at the sunset.

"As a baby she was pawing at it, and sometimes she'd suck on the rim of it. So I think it feels to her like something special, something daddy, something family."

"And there's no alcohol in it!" Kelly said, with the actress agreeing.

Kristen adds that because of this, when they go out to eat, the girls will sometimes order the drink, "We've been at restaurants where she's said, 'Do you have any non-alcoholic beer?' and I'm like . . . maybe we just keep that for home time."

"It's so amazing when in your own family, you're like 'this is normal,' but then you go outside and you're like, 'So that maybe doesn't track as healthy!'" Kelly said.

"But then I'm also sort of like, you can judge me if you want, I'm not doing anything wrong. Like that's your problem," Kristen said.

"Yep, that's on you," Kelly agreed.

While some non-alcoholic beers have zero alcohol, in the United States, anything that is less than 0.5 per cent alcohol by volume [ABV] can be labelled as non-alcoholic, meaning many non-alcoholic beers aren't actually alcohol-free.

It's likely that Kristen and Dax would ensure what they are drinking is alcohol-free if they are giving it to their children, and also because Dax is a recovering addict and working on his sobriety every day.

However, this didn't stop people on the Internet from assuming otherwise, with one YouTube user commenting, "Its actually illegal because there is a small amount of alcohol in NA beer. You must be 21 to consume NA beer."

"Many non-alcoholic beers still contain alcohol. Eek," another said. "As a former server and bartender for a major restaurant in the U.S., we were told we were not allowed to serve minors non-alcoholic beer."

Research has found that commonly consumed foods can have similar levels of alcohol, with the Journal of Analytical Toxicology revealing ripe bananas contain 0.4 per cent ABC, while an 'American-style burger roll' was as high as 1.28 per cent. Kombucha and grape juice can also have between 0.5-0.9 per cent ABV.
