Kim Kardashian Wore a Gray Sweater to the 2024 Met Gala

Of course there was an over-the-top naked dress underneath.

Kim Kardashian went from being a plus-one to the undisputed queen of the buzzy Met Gala look. After breaking the internet not once but twice at both the 2021 and 2022 Met Galas with her head-to-toe T-shirt and Marilyn Monroe moments, respectively, the reality star is reclaiming her crown at this year's event in what might surprise anyone familiar with Kim's go-to body-con glam fashion M.O.: a gray cardigan over a Maison Margiela couture creation.

Kardashian arrived on the carpet clutching a knit gray shrug, looking very cozy and comfortable despite the fact that underneath, she was wearing a waist-cinching naked dress. Under the cardi, she wore a fully embellished metallic gown that featured leaf and floral motifs with plenty of skin peeking out from between the botanical pattern. Her impossibly tiny waist came courtesy of a corset and she finished the look with long, blonde hair, braided at the bottom—a transformation from her short pink bob from last week.

Last year, Kardashian took a year off from being the most talked about celebrity at the event, while she still dressed perfectly to the Karl Lagerfeld theme in a Schiaparelli look made of strands of pearls and diamonds layered over a beige corset (although, her daughter North West wasn't a fan). She walked the carpet alone with an ivory crêpe shawl-and-train hybrid.

While speaking with Vogue livestream hosts Chloe Fineman and Derek Blasberg, Kardashian recalled the moment that the dress broke as she was leaving her hotel. "I wanted to be dripping in pearls. I told my daughter to grab them all. They’re real pearls," she explained.

In 2022, Kardashian set the internet into a frenzy when she not only arrived fashionably late with her boyfriend-at-the-time Pete Davidson, but she also wore Monroe's iconic "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress.

Kardashian received backlash for borrowing the vintage Jean Louis gown from Ripley's Believe It Or Not, as well as for admitting to losing 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into it. During the corresponding The Kardashians episode that aired later, Kardashian explained her process of fitting into the dress. "I'm gonna do every last thing that I can to try to make this happen," she said over videos of her at the gym, per People. "It's gonna be really hard. I'm gonna have to eat so clean and so perfect and cut out sugar, which is so hard for me."
