Kevin Costner Lines Up Director for His Next 'Incredible Longtime Passion Project' Movie
Kevin Costner has a two-part movie franchise in theaters this year, 'Horizon: An American Saga'
Kevin Costner has secured his next big project.
The Oscar winner, 69, will star in and produce a still-untitled feature film to be adapted from a script he owns. Ariel Vromen will direct the film, according to Deadline. The plot has not been revealed, and production is expected to begin in 2025, Deadline reported.
Vromen last directed Costner in the 2016 thriller Criminal, which also starred Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones.
The filmmaker wrote on Instagram about the news Tuesday, "So excited to be back in the ring with my dear friend, mentor and the incredible talented Kevin Costner on his incredible longtime passion project. Keep doing good for others, keep giving. Don't ask for anything in return - don't worry it will come back 100%."
Another project the Dances With Wolves star has said he’s been working on for years is the multi-part Western Horizon: An American Saga, from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line. Separated into two chapters, the big-screen project will premiere in theaters this June 28, and Aug. 16.
Costner’s involvement in Horizon as director, star and co-writer with Jon Baird meant a scaling back of his time on Yellowstone, the hit series he led as rancher John Dutton, a performance that last year earned him a Golden Globe.
The second half of season 5 was announced as the show’s final installment and will premiere in November, following reports that Costner’s limited shooting schedule was a “source of frustration" for creator Taylor Sheridan.
Both Yellowstone and Horizon came up in court during Costner’s divorce with ex-wife Christine throughout 2023. During a child support hearing in September, the star testified that he wanted to return for a sixth Yellowstone season but declined because he was offered less money than he had made previously. Costner also cited creative issues in making his decision.
Also arriving in 2024 is Vromen’s next project, 1992, starring Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta.

Another recent update from Costner is his “newest addition to the family,” as revealed on Instagram on Thursday: a new puppy. "I'm already in love with this special guy,” wrote the actor-director.
The news followed Costner’s 69th birthday on Jan. 18, which he marked with another Instagram post that included a throwback photo of his debut film, 1981's Malibu Hot Summer.
