Keri Russell's Mornings Include "Bouncing Around" in Her Underwear
"My kids would die if they saw me."
Keri Russell's alarmingly early call times are enough to raise eyebrows, but according to a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, the star of The Diplomat (the newest season is already on Netflix's Top 10 for the week) has a morning ritual that may be more head-scratching than alarming.
Russell, who rose to fame as a Mouseketeer on the Mickey Mouse Club before winning over hearts as Felicity Porter on The WB's Felicity, shared that to get her day going, she heads outside in her pajamas and bounces around. It's not quite a workout, it's not really a hardcore Pilates routine, and it's not anything she can fully explain, but it is undoubtedly a unique approach to waking up.
"I'm filming right now, so my call is usually pretty early, about 4:45 in the morning. I tiptoe through the house. I open up the door and go outside and do this weird little bouncing thing. You kind of shake, you bounce up and down, and I just do it for like five minutes," she explained. "The last few years, my back has been going out. And I find that if I do this bouncing thing, it shakes it all back into place. We were shooting in London, some mornings were rainy, I'd go out in my little nerdy T-shirt I slept in, I'd do my bounce around."
She went on to say that anyone who manages to catch a glimpse of her routine may wish they never did.
"I'm positive there are multiple days of security footage of this tired mom showing her underwear that no one needs to see with a tired, saggy, weird face and messy hair," she added.
As for actual exercise, Russell added that there is bouncing involved, but she notes that there's "amazing" music and dancing.
"I do a quick little 15-minute workout. I'll put on some amazing music, like full of teenage lust and longing, and just dance around and bounce around," she adds. "My kids would die if they saw me, but it makes me happy."
Russell also took a moment to reflect on her relationship with fellow actor Matthew Rhys. The two starred in The Americans together and share an 8-year-old son. Russell also shares two children with her ex, carpenter Shane Deary.
"People have bad days. I remember this co-worker of mine said, 'Bad days? I’ve had bad years in my marriage.' There are bad years where you kind of miss each other," Russell said before offering a few tips that have worked for her. "I just try to pay attention when I can. And getting away from kids occasionally is really important, and we try to do that. If we could all procreate with our girlfriends, I guess we probably would."
