Christmas may be a time for celebration, but this year, for Kate Middleton, it's also a moment to reflect. On Saturday, the Princess of Wales penned a poignant holiday message to the 1,600 guests of her annual "Together at Christmas" carol concert following a difficult year that saw her undergo chemotherapy treatment after a devastating cancer diagnosis

In her letter, Middleton gave thanks to those who "have provided comfort, counsel and connection" to others amid tough times.

"Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. It is a time for celebration and joy, but it also gives us the opportunity to slow down and reflect on the deeper things that connect us all," she began her message. "It is when we stop and take ourselves away from the pressures of daily life, that we find the space to live our lives with an open heart, with love, kindness and forgiveness - so much of what the Christmas spirit is all about."

Kate went on to note that the Christmas story not only "encourages us to consider the experiences and feelings of others," but also "reflects on our vulnerabilities and reminds us of the importance of giving and receiving empathy."

She continued, "Above all else, it encourages us to turn to love, not fear. The love that we show ourselves and the love we show others. Love that listens with empathy, love that is kind and understanding, love that is forgiving, and love that brings joy and hope. It is this love which is the greatest gift we can receive. Not just at Christmas, but every day of our lives. Love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times."

The princess reminded everyone that we all have something we can offer one another—whether it's "gentle words or a receptive ear, an arm around an exhausted shoulder" or just "silently being by someone's side."

Before wishing the public "a very Merry Christmas," Kate revealed what her carol service is all about: "A reminder that at Christmas, and throughout the year, we must all shine for each other. Because in times of joy and sadness, we are all each other's light."

Earlier this year, Middleton took a step back from her royal duties while recovering from her cancer treatment, but has returned to work in recent months, with the upcoming Christmas concert as her next major event. Kate and her husband, Prince William, will be joined by other members of the royal family for the occasion—including their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
