Kate Middleton revealed that she has completed chemotherapy on September 9 in a video that featured Prince William and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The touching, three-minute look into their lives, however, served as a deviation for the royal family, and showed the unit engaging with one another in a laid-back and personal way. According to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, William and Middleton are intentionally trying to forge their own unique way going forward.

“A video means that firstly you connect very, very personally rather than just in a statement,” Fitzwilliams told Us Weekly. “You can also show family life and you can also get an impression of what normality is like. And that is of course what we see. But equally, if you listen to the words, you understand that for nine months there’s been a struggle. And that struggle has been tough, and there’s plenty still to go.”

The family dynamic was full on display in the video, and featured several intimate PDA moments between the Prince and Princess of Wales, and showed how they interact with George, Charlotte, and Louis. Elsewhere in the video, the kids run through fields of beach grass, climb trees, run into the ocean, and at points, even play with the camera to make goofy faces.

"I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family," Middleton said in the video's voiceover between the sweet family clips. "The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything."

Fitzwilliams noted that the video "gave us an insight into [their] personal [lives] that we hadn’t seen before. I think it’s unique and deeply touching, because I think that what they felt was that it’s one thing to say what you’ve been through or try [to] convey it. And it’s quite another to actually show closeness, which members of the royal family normally don’t."

It's not a common practice for any royal to get so personal, but in this case, Fitzwilliams noted, "there are important exceptions, and I think this was an exception. It reminds me of the queen’s comment: ‘Well, protocol is rubbish.’ They make their own rules."
