Even a princess needs to dress practically from time to time, as Kate Middleton took the time to explain to a pint-sized fan yesterday.

The Duchess of Cambridge was visiting Cumbria, a farming district in North West England, and was dressed down for the occasion in trousers and a coat.

When she greeted two adorable sisters however, there was some confusion over the royal’s attire.

The little girl was apparently expecting the standard uniform of a royal lady (according to Frozen) and was determined to get to the bottom of it, even if she shyly prompted her dad to ask the question for her.

“She wanted to know if you’d be wearing your Princess Elsa dress,” a sheepish dad laughingly relayed to the duchess, while the mini detective looked on.

Kate wasn’t phased, and had an entirely practical response to what she treated as a very legitimate question.

“I know. I’m sorry,” she graciously responded. “I came in my trousers and my coat because I’m going to see some sheep.”

She even sought the girl’s approval asking if she thought it was a good idea.

Getting in amongst it

William and Kate were visiting the young fan’s family farm as part of their trip to the region.

The couple also greeted local spectators in the town of Keswick.

As they officially tweeted, the pair “celebrated the work of local heroes, volunteers and those supporting the rural community in Cumbria”.

They even took some time for some four-legged royal fans, true to her word Kate took a turn in the shearing shed and appearing to have an absolute ball.

She also took a brief time out to pet three very cute dogs.

One pup was named Harry, after her brother-in-law, Prince Harry.
