Johnny Depp Accused of Outrageous 'Prank' Involving Gunfire

Johnny Depp once played an outrageous “prank” on Don Johnson’s assistant with a bit of help from Hunter S. Thompson, the Miami Vice star recalled during a recent appearance on a late night show.

The 74-year-old actor shared the story while chatting with Jimmy Kimmel on the Thursday, Nov. 7, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! The anecdote came up in conversation after Kimmel, 56, mentioned that he and Don’s daughter, actress Dakota Johnson, are neighbors. Kimmel also mentioned his awareness that Don and his family were once neighbors with Thompson.

"Hunter was my best friend for, like, 25 years,” Don said, adding that the late gonzo journalist was “an amazing fellow.” However, Thompson and Dakota shared a common love for “pranks,” the Doctor Odyssey star added.

Kimmel then asked for clarification about a prank he’d heard about involving Depp, who starred in the 1998 film adaptation of Thompson’s book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Don appeared game to revisit the memory, which he said started out with an interest in procuring some marijuana for a small gathering he was having at his home.

“I called over to Hunter’s to see if he had any weed. Of course he had, you know, I think a ton out back,” Don said as the audience laughed. “So I said, ‘Listen, I’m going to come over and get some weed, because I’ve got a little group of people here.’ So he said, ‘Yeah sure, come on over.’”

But as Don then explained, he sent his assistant over to the writer's house instead of going himself. The assistant, who Don did not identify by name, had a surprise waiting for him when he drove up Thompson’s driveway.

“Johnny Depp and Hunter were hiding behind Hunter’s car with shotguns loaded with blanks,” Don recalled. "My assistant got out of the car, and they both jumped out and said, ‘Die, mother—.’” At this, Don paused the story to mimic shooting a shotgun.

“My assistant—god bless him—he peed his pants,” Don said, bringing the story to its conclusion.

“Did he really?” Kimmel asked as the audience erupted into laughter.

“Oh yeah,” Don confirmed before turning the question back on Kimmel. “Wouldn’t you?”

“Yes—at least,” Kimmel joked.
