One month after announcing her separation from husband Eric Johnson, Jessica Simpson is opening up about where they stand today.
Speaking to People, Simpson told the outlet, “I don’t know why my heart gets tossed around, but I’m one of the lucky ones,” she told the outlet. “At least I have my children, and I still have Eric. He’s still very much a part of my life and always will be.”
The former couple are co-parenting their three children Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie. Of this difficult season, Simpson added, “I’ve grown up so much. I can handle so much. Maybe I’m just meant to love a lot of people in my life.”

Johnson and SimpsonThe singer and former NFL player married in July 2014, and dated for four years before that, meeting through a mutual friend in 2010 and getting engaged that November after six months together. Back in November, Simpson cryptically wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of herself in a recording studio, “This comeback is personal. It’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.”
In January, Simpson told People she and Johnson were separating after 10 years of marriage: “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she said. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
In previous interviews with the outlet, Simpson said that her relationship with Johnson always felt “easy” and that they always tried to “keep the romance there, even with three kids.”

In 2023, she said, “A true love will never make you question yourself or what's real. Thanks to my amazing soulmate, I am able to love passionately and without fear of being hurt.”
Simpson—who was married once before Johnson, to fellow singer Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2005—added, “I don't find it hard to love anybody, but I have always thought that I was hard to love, that I was too much for people, or my schedule was too demanding.” Of Johnson, she continued, “He knows my heart and understands my heart more than anyone I've ever met in my life.”
