Jessica Simpson and estranged husband Eric Johnson are figuring out what’s next for their marriage amid their separation. The multi-hyphenate has yet to share whether she and her partner of 10 years are headed for divorce, but she recently confirmed that she and the former NFL player have been living separately while “navigating a painful situation” in their relationship. Amid reports that their surprise split was actually a long time coming, numerous sources now say that a divorce filing could come soon as Simpson has realized the pair ultimately don’t have the same vision for their future.

Simpson and Johnson have reportedly tried working through issues in their marriage in counseling, but have been unable to see eye to eye–and apparently, their problems go deeper than the “trust issues” previously reported. “They’d done counseling before, but it didn’t get them anywhere, and Jessica wasn’t interested in doing it again,” a source told Us Weekly. “They’ve had enough of the back-and-forth and ups and downs. They want different things.”

Before Simpson’s January statement to People confirming their separation, both parties sparked speculation that there was trouble in their marriage when they were seen stepping out without their wedding rings. Amid reports that “trust issues” were a factor in their decision, a source tells Us Weekly that Simpson wasn’t happy when Johnson was spotted flirting with other women at a bar.

“Jessica is not [the type of] woman to put up with anything,” the insider shared. “She’s independent, and she has her own mind and money and her family’s support.”

Their differing career outlooks and goals could have also sparked a deeper reflection into their marriage, as Simpson is reportedly back in the studio working on a new album. The sources also said she’s been writing another book and focusing on her health and sobriety. Johnson retired from his football career in 2007.

“Jessica has been incredibly generous with Eric,” a source close to Simpson told Us Weekly. “She’s never had any resentment because she looks at them as a family. Anything that has been earned has been for her family, and they all contribute in different ways. He’s tried to find his place career-wise, and she has always supported that.”

The pair have a prenup, but the Simpson insider added that their divorce had the potential to “get messy.” However, another source previously told the publication that Simpson is at peace with the breakup. “She isn’t going to worry about [what he is doing] and is doing her thing too,” they explained. “She has her own mind, money, and family support for whatever happens.”

In addition to selling her Hidden Hills home for a “fresh start,” the fashion designer has been reportedly leaning on her little sister Ashlee through the split. “Jessica’s family just wants her to feel safe, secure and happy,” a source told the publication. “They support whatever decisions she makes to keep her and the kids in a stable place.”
