Jasmine's dress called out for 'cultural appropriation'

Jasmine Yarbrough was absolutely glowing when she walked down the aisle yesterday at her lavish Mexican wedding to Karl Stefanovic.

Her bespoke gown featuring a short hemline overlaid with a long detachable skirt at the back reportedly took designer Jess Andreatta of J. Andreatta six months to create.

The designer who admits her style is “to push the boundaries,” collaborated with Jasmine to create a design full of beaded Aztec motifs to make reference to the wedding’s Mexican location.

However, some fans aren’t all that impressed by the design and have called Jasmine out for cultural appropriation – defined as “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.”

Posting to Facebook, some people questioned, “why this was the inspiration her and the designer settled for.”

“She’s not remotely Mexican or Aztec, neither is he,” another pointed out.

Others went so far as to say the designs were not even a true representation of ‘Aztec’ culture.

“In Mexican schools they teach us the difference between Aztec and Mayan culture which are very similar… and believe me those designs are nothing similar to either of them,” one person commented.

“Cultural appropriation. And since it’s not even accurate, it’s essentially a caricature of a stereotype of what they thought was ‘Mexico themed’,” another said.

“I call this bull***t. Also, cultural appropriation sucks,” a third follower fumed.

While another person wrote, “It would have been cool if they just got it right. It’s nice seeing others appreciate your culture.”

Meanwhile, 44-year-old Today Show host cut a dapper figure in Tom Ford tuxedo and RM William boots and couldn’t help but gush about his 34-year-old wife.

“Jasmine, you have taken on enormous stress with me, you have taken on another family, media and social criticism that would break most — you’ve weathered it,” he said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

“You stand tall, you stand strong, you stand up and keep walking.

“You are my rock, you are my saviour, you put me back together. I’m a better person because of you, a better friend, a better dad — tonight I celebrate and toast you Jasmine my wife.”
