When Jade Carey realized she had won Olympic gold for her floor routine at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she immediately turned to her father, Brian Carey, for a big hug.

International visitors were barred from traveling to Tokyo as a COVID-19 precaution, but Brian was an exception because he was pulling double duty as her coach. His presence was precisely what the Phoenix-born athlete needed.

“Having my dad out there by my side means everything to me,” Jade said in a press conference after the all-around final. “I'm really glad we were able to share this together.”

Brian was in awe of the newly minted gold medalist’s perseverance. “It was so incredible to see her do that. It was overwhelming,” he said in an interview with the Corvallis Gazette-Times in 2024.

Her mom, Danielle Greenberg, watched her daughter’s dreams come true from home in Gilbert, Ariz. In 2024, Jade returned to the Olympics — although she didn't qualify to defend her floor title she was scheduled to compete in team and vault.

In a 2021 interview with the Arizona Republic, Danielle recalled how she and her ex-husband, Brian, approached their daughter’s gymnastics career.

“My philosophy from the beginning was I just wanted her to love the sport on her own,” she explained. “Her dad and I never pushed. We let her guide the ship all the way through. We didn't talk about gymnastics at home. She could really just develop the way she wanted to.”

From their gymnastics roots to being her biggest cheerleaders, here's everything to know about Jade Carey's parents, Brian Carey and Danielle Greenberg.

They are divorced

Brian and Danielle divorced when Jade was young, but the split was amicable. They even devised a custody arrangement based on their daughter’s training schedule. And when Danielle couldn’t join Jade in Tokyo for the Olympics, she was grateful that Brian was there to support her.

“I love it she can have her dad there,” she told the Arizona Republic in 2021. “He's got her back in every situation, it doesn't matter what arises.”

Brian and Danielle have four kids between them

Jade has three siblings, per her Team USA bio.

Brian and Danielle’s older daughter, Alexsis Carey Lee, married in 2023. Danielle has two other children from another relationship as well: Xandon and Taeva Greenberg.

They are former gymnasts

Jade is a chip off the old block; both her parents are former gymnasts. According to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, Danielle is a former “all-star” gymnast who graduated from Colorado’s Longmont High School in 1989. Brian got his start in the sport a bit later in high school.

“I started my freshman year and my high school class coach after about a month said, ‘Hey, you should probably go somewhere.’ So it was kind of cool. I found a local club and started there,” he told the Corvallis Gazette-Times in 2024.

He started coaching in high school as well. Brian graduated at age 17 and joined the Marine Corps, but when he got out, he returned to the sport.

“When I came back, the local club coach I had gone to, there was a younger boys team and he said, ‘I want you to take over this group and as they grow through the levels you’ll grow with them.’ And I ended up taking over as the head coach for the men’s program,” he explained.

Brian is now the owner of Carey On Gymnastics and Danielle is also a competitive team coach at Gold Medal Gymnastics in Chandler, Ariz. The gym was founded by Amanda Borden, captain of the team that won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta — a.k.a the Magnificent Seven.

Brian has been by his daughter’s side for all her biggest accomplishments as her coach, but he wasn’t an overbearing parent. In fact, despite recognizing his daughter’s skill as early as age 2, he didn’t start coaching her until she was 11 years old.

“I knew when she was young she had a gift. I didn’t want to push it, definitely didn’t want to push it for me,” he revealed in a 2024 interview with the Corvallis Gazette-Times. “I wanted her to hopefully fall in love with the sport, which she did. I just thought it would be too much when she was little to be coaching her all the time. So I would just clap and ask her how her day was and if she had fun. That was about it.”

Their partnership has worked so well that, besides coaching her to Olympic gold, Brian is also one of Jade’s college coaches. He joined the gymnastics coaching staff at Oregon State University in 2023, teaming up with head coach Tanya Chaplin and associate head coach Michael Chaplin.

Danielle has another gymnast daughter

Danielle has another competitive gymnast in the family. Her daughter Taeva won the Arizona Level 10 State All-Around Championship in 2023. She also placed first in the uneven bars and floor exercise. Taeva received a full-ride scholarship to Brigham Young University, and her mom was filled with praise in a congratulatory Instagram post in 2023.

“I am so incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication and perseverance in this amazing but crazy sport of gymnastics!!” Danielle wrote. “I have had so much fun watching you grow and succeed, and I can’t wait to see what you do next season and at the collegiate level!! BYU is getting an amazing young lady!! I love you Tae!!”

Danielle wasn’t able to join her daughter at the delayed Tokyo Olympics due to pandemic protocols, but she didn’t let that stop her from cheering Jade on from a distance. She joined an intimate group of friends and family in Gilbert, Ariz., to watch her daughter’s debut at the Games. The mom of four could not contain her excitement as she watched the elite gymnast compete.

“The whole experience has just been amazing!” she shared with PEOPLE in 2021. “I am so proud of her and her accomplishments on this wonderful journey! I was so excited about her going out and hitting all four routines in the biggest competition of her life!!”

She continued, “I was even more proud of her character, and the way she presented herself on the competition floor. The sacrifices she has made, her strong work ethic, her dedication to this difficult sport and her perseverance are all the qualities that helped shape her into the athlete she is today!”

They are both cheering her on at the 2024 Paris Olympics

In the summer of 2024, Jade's parents had another opportunity to cheer on their sporty daughter, but this time, both Brian and Danielle could be in person.

At the Paris Olympics, Danielle was seen shouting out for Jade after her vault performance. That same day, the gymnast fell during floor qualifiers, which she explained was a result of feeling sick the week prior. Brian also missed an event due to illness the week before the Olympic kickoff.

Jade's parents, as well as gymnastics legends like Aly Raisman, have rallied in support of the athlete after her fall.
