Internet Can't Stop Laughing as Jimmy Kimmel Pulls Off Viral $19 Strawberry Prank on Unsuspecting Fans
Jimmy Kimmel wants to get to the bottom of the Erewhon strawberry hype.
The organic Los Angeles-based grocery shop is said to be selling the best-tasting strawberries in the world, pricing the imported fruit from Kyoto, Japan, at $19 a pop—and fans can't figure out if it's worth the price.
But leave it to Kimmel to put unsuspecting fans—and their taste buds—to the test.
In a new segment featured on the Tuesday, March 11 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, pedestrians walking around L.A. were asked if they wanted to sample one of the $19 Erewhon strawberries, unaware of the fact that they had actually been replaced with Driscoll's strawberries priced at 36 cents apiece.
All of the prank participants unknowingly fell for Kimmel's trick, with each person insisting that the strawberry they tasted was sweeter, juicier and even more "fleshy" than a regular grocery store strawberry.
"That's a really good strawberry," one of the taste-testers insisted, while another person said, "I guess you could say it doesn't taste GMO," prompting a laugh from Kimmel's audience.
"Best, sweetest strawberry I've ever had," another participant gushed.
One of the prank victims—who even identified themself as a chef—tried the fake $19 strawberry and a regular grocery store one, without knowing that they were from the same package. He claimed that they tasted completely different.
By the end of the clip, the chef was told that the two strawberries he tried were the exact same, prompting him to blurt out, "Oh shit!" after realizing he'd been duped.
"This gave me such a good laugh! 👏," one user wrote on Instagram after seeing the well-pulled-off prank.
"That chef must be mortified! 😂," another user commented, while someone else wanted to know, "Why is everyone so gullible 😂."
"How embarrassing 😳…." another comment read.
