'Iconic' collaboration coming from 'When Harry Met Sally' stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal

Fans of the 1989 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally..." are quivering with anticipation after the film's co-stars shared this week that they are working on something new and "iconic."

"It's finally happening, we're reuniting for something iconic. Can't wait to show you all soon," Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, who played Sally Albright and Harry Burns in the film, said in a joint Instagram post on Thursday.

In the post, Ryan and Crystal sit next to each other on a set that resembles the one used for couples interviews in the film (the jury is still out if the table is made from a wagon wheel). In the photo, Crystal dons a cable knit sweater very much like the one Harry wears in the film and Ryan sports a blazer and button-up similar to the business casual outfits Sally is known for.

For viewers unfamiliar with the film's plot, "When Harry Met Sally" takes place in 1977, when college graduates Harry Burns and Sally Albright spend a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York arguing about whether men and women can truly be only platonic friends. Ten years later, Harry and Sally reunite at a bookstore and in the company of their respective friends Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), the two try to stay friends without sex or romance coming between them.

The "When Harry Met Sally" co-stars haven't shared further details about their collaboration, but fans are already speculating.

What could the collaboration be?

Some fans, including online lifestyle brand Brit + Co, predicted that Ryan and Crystal may be collaborating on an ad for Super Bowl LIX, scheduled for Feb. 9.

"Immediately, I wondered if it's for a Super Bowl commercial because the Super Bowl is coming up very quickly and it makes sense that they would be filming something small and not like a feature-length film or anything," a Brit + Co content creator said in a TikTok video posted Thursday. "There just doesn't seem to be enough room for a plot like that."

Taking the Super Bowl ad speculation one step further, TikTok user Gracie Aki predicted the ad would be for Uber Eats.

To support her theory, Aki recalled Uber Eats' Super Bowl commercial from 2021, when the food delivery platform brought together Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, stars of "Wayne's World."

"I think that it'll be Meg Ryan as Sally being like, 'You know, sometimes you want something on the side,' and then he's (Crystal's) going to be like, 'On the side is a very big thing for you.' And then they'll be like, 'With Uber Eats, we can both get what we want,'" Aki said in her TikTok video. "I think that's the ad from that one photo alone."

Numerous comments under the Instagram announcement agreed, saying that though they hope there is some kind of sequel coming, they believe it is more likely that fans can expect a Super Bowl ad.

A timeless cult classic

Released in 1989, "When Harry Met Sally" grossed $92.8 million at the box office, according to IMDb. Over the past 26 years, the rom-com has become a cult classic especially beloved by Gen Xers, who remember seeing the film in theaters, and Gen Zers, who hunger for romance amid an ever-shifting dating landscape.

In the wake of Ryan and Crystal's announcement, some fans are taking the time to share their favorite memories associated with "When Harry Met Sally."

"My parents were 'just friends' since they were young and they went to the movies to see 'When Harry Met Sally.' My mom came out crying and said to my dad, 'I don't want to be just friends anymore,' and my dad replied, 'Neither do I.' They are the real-life Harry and Sally. Happily married for almost 34 years," Instagram user Sydney Altfield said in a comment on the stars' Instagram posts.

"It only took six months. Thirty five years and six months. #wellworththewait #favoritemovie," said another.

"I've said it since it was released. My FAVORITE movie! EVER! In fact, I saw it one Friday night and when it was over, we turned around and went right back in to watch it again," added another.
