I spent $100 on this faux fur blanket from West Elm, and I don't regret a penny
The plush throw is soft, warm and absurdly luxurious — but there are some great under-$40 alternatives too.
If you're anything like me, you know the throw blanket — not the couch — can make or break your living room. Buying a new throw blanket is a shockingly personal experience akin to finding the right underwear. You don't just want it to look good; you want it to feel good, especially during cozy season.
Three years ago, after months of staring at it in my cart, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the luxe West Elm Faux Fur Ombre Throw as a little housewarming gift for my fiancé and me. It turned out to be the best home purchase I've ever made.
Available in three rich colors, this blanket is the warmest and coziest you'll ever wrap up in. I love it so much that I'll crank the AC in the middle of the summer just so I can stay buried beneath it.
From the moment I first cozied up under this blanket, I knew I was a goner. Not only are the silky faux fur fibers super soft and warm, the blanket feels like a giant bear hug. It's definitely on the heavier end, but it's lightweight enough not to veer into "weighted blanket" territory. Don't even get me started on the number of A+ naps I've had with this throw.
One of the best things about the blanket is the sheer size of it — and I have the smaller standard size. My fiancé is 6-foot-3, and we're still able to cuddle under it together. When I'm by myself, it can cover my whole body and then some. It's like my own fuzzy blanket fort. So, yes, sometimes (well, a lot of the time) I'll kindly, affectionately kick him to the other side of the couch and make him use another blanket while I bask in this one's warmth.
Even after three years of excessive use, this West Elm throw still holds up. Does it look brand new? Definitely not, but there's been no shedding, fading or matting, and it looks great neatly folded over the couch and at the foot of the bed or messily thrown over the couch cushions. And, yes, it is still just as soft as the day I bought it.
Gotta have more space? The oversized option delivers extra cuddling capacity.
Much as I love my blanket, I acknowledge that $109 puts it firmly in splurge territory, especially at this expensive time of year. But there are a handful of affordable alternatives, especially when it comes to the soft faux fur and the sophisticated ombré design. Check 'em out below and cuddle up in plenty of time for the holidays.
Available in nine colors and four sizes, this throw features soft shaggy fur on one side and fuzzy sherpa on the other.
"This is mine and my dog's favorite blanket," shared a pet parent in their five-star review. "He will come up and paw at it to be let underneath it and he will seek this particular blanket out. I am a little jealous that it's more his than mine at this point. Pup approved."
With faux fur fabric on both sides, this throw is one you're going to want to stay cuddled under for hours. I love the brown, but you can choose between 10 colors.
"This blanket looks and feels high-end," shared a Walmart customer. "I saw it a month ago in a video and decided to test it out ... it's beyond what I was expecting. It's soft, warm and looks great. It's not super thick but it is heavy."
Even though it's under $40, this blanket looks like a million bucks. While you should definitely grab one for yourself, your loved ones will be thrilled to open this over the holidays — especially the ones who seem like they already have everything.
"This faux fur blanket looks very real, just like the picture, but a little better in person," explained an Amazon shopper. "It's soft, luxurious, thick, warm, and doesn't even shed. I tested it last night while wearing black to bed, and I didn't have a single fiber on me in the morning. I also really appreciate that there was no weird manufacturing smell."
