Unicorn Christmas trees are the most magical festive trend
Despite being the stuff of fairytales, unicorns have had a resurgence of late with their horned heads popping up on everything from t-shirts to candles and even as a contestant on The Masked Singer.
Now, the mythical beast is set to take the festive season by storm with a slew of unicorn-inspired Christmas trees sweeping Instagram.
Crafty folks have created their own using unicorn decorations, colourful lights and - the pièce de résistance - a unicorn horn in lieu of a traditional star or angel.
The result is a fun, modern twist on a yuletide classic that’ll please kids and adults alike.
How to make a unicorn-themed Christmas tree
If you’re wondering how to create your very own unicorn-themed Christmas tree at home this festive season, wonder no longer.
From the tree to the lights, decorations and the all-important unicorn horn to top it all off, here are some of the cutest (and most wallet-friendly) items out there to inspire you.
White Christmas tree
First of all, you’ll need a tree but why not switch out the traditional green for a fun and funky snow white version - it’s the perfect canvas to make all the unicorn decorations stand out. We love this $39 one from Kmart.
Unicorn tree-topper
Forget a star or an angel, for your unicorn Christmas tree you’ll need a unicorn horn and while it’s not made-to-purpose, this Cotton On headband ($12.99) is the next best thing.
Unicorn Christmas lights
Deck your tree with more unicorn magic with these $6 purple unicorn string lights from Kmart.
Unicorn tree decorations
Who doesn’t want a herd of glittery unicorns (these ones are $12.95 for a two from David Jones) dancing across their tree?
Pink, blue and silver ornaments
An assortment of ornaments in different sizes, shapes and colours are a must. We like this pack of 110 for $15 from Kmart.
More unicorn tree decorations
These winged beauties ($5 from Big W) will give your tree that extra lift and comes in four colours: pink, purple, green and gold to suit your theme.
Silver tinsel
Every Christmas tree, even a unicorn-themed one, needs a bit of tinsel. Go for silver - like this $5 tinsel from Kmart - for a modern feel.
A unicorn pool float ornament
Add a bit of whimsy with a quirky summer-inspired ornament like this unicorn pool float Christmas tree ornament, $12.95 from David Jones.
Snowflake lights
A multicoloured set of string lights - like these 20 LED Low Voltage Snowflake String Lights, $9.60 from Big W - will add a magical feel.
Candy-coloured baubles
These baubles ($4 from Big W) are so sugary sweet you almost want to eat them - but don’t! They’re best hung on the tree.
A light-up unicorn
A 65cm high, light-up tinsel unicorn (this one is $29 from Kmart) isn’t essential to your unicorn-themed tree but ‘tis the season to be jolly, so why not?
Unicorns not really your thing? No problem - we’ve got heaps more tree inspo for you, including ice cream, wildlife and cotton candy themed trees.
