A series adaptation of the 1998 novel Holes by Louis Sachar has been ordered to pilot, according to Variety and Entertainment Weekly. The potential series, however, will be reimagined to follow a female lead rather than a male.

Variety, who first reported the news, states that the logline for the series reads, "A teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose."

Disney+ and Walden Media did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Alina Mankin, who previously worked on The Mindy Project and Anne with an E, will reportedly serve as the writer and executive producer; and Liz Phang, whose credits include Yellowjackets and Foundation, will be the showrunner and executive producer. Daredevil creator Drew Goddard will also executive produce, as well as Sarah Esberg, Mike Medavoy and Andrea Massaro.

Walden Media, which produced the original film, will return for the pilot. Yet, it is unclear if any of the cast members from the movie will star in the series.

The book was previously adapted into a 2003 movie starring Shia LaBeouf, Khleo Thomas, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette and Eartha Kitt. The dramedy grossed over $16,300,000 in its opening weekend, finishing in the No. 2 spot at the box office, per Box Office Mojo.

Sachar’s book follows Stanley Yelnats as he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a boys' detention center, after being wrongfully convicted of theft. There, he and a group of other boys are tasked with digging precise holes every day under the watch of the strict warden. As the story continues, Stanley learns more about his own past and develops a close friendship with his fellow prisoners.

The pilot order follows Disney+ reviving Wizards of Waverly Place last year, with several of the original cast members including Selena Gomez and David Henrie returning for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Recently, the streamer announced a four-episode Malcolm in the Middle revival, starring series vets Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek.
