Nick Cannon Said That He Is Embracing His Mental Health Journey “In Such A Strong Way” After He Was Diagnosed With Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Earlier this month, Nick Cannon revealed that he has been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, which the Mayo Clinic describes as a “mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance.”
The 44-year-old star opened up during a sit-down chat with psychologist Dr. Cheyenne Bryant on his Counsel Culture podcast, where he confirmed that he had been “clinically diagnosed.”
At the time, Nick added that there is a “spectrum,” and that he has “no problem” with the diagnosis. He also said that he can identify with all of the typical markers of NPD, except for having a “lack of empathy” and “rage.”
For reference, typical symptoms include requiring “constant, excessive admiration,” feeling as though you “deserve privileges and special treatment,” and expecting “to be recognized as superior even without achievements.”
People with NPD are also said to be “preoccupied with fantasies about success,” and “be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important.”
Nick said on his podcast: “I’ve taken all the power away from the term narcissism 'cause I've researched it and I understand it… Call me whatever you want.”
And in a new interview with People, Nick has admitted that he needs help as he candidly discussed his recent diagnosis.
"I still don't understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it. I did a bunch of tests," he told the publication. "I've been diagnosed with ADHD. Even as a kid it was dyslexia, but just knowing that I'm just a neurodivergent individual, I kind of always knew.”
"I feel like there's so many labels out there, but to be able to embrace it and say: ‘Look, I'm healing. I need help. Show me,’ I just embrace mental health and therapy in such a strong way," Nick added.
“To be able to say I'm an example for others, but also be healing during the self-process works too," he concluded.
In October, Nick confessed that his ego took a hit during his relationship with pop superstar Mariah Carey, who he was married to between 2008 and 2014.
Speaking on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast, Nick said: “I would lay up at night thinking, like, ‘Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?’”
Nick insisted that there was “nothing wrong” with being “Mariah’s man” and admitted that he grew “comfortable” with her being the breadwinner in the relationship.
However, when their twins, Moroccan and Monroe, were born in 2011, Nick started to struggle with his role within the family.
“I’m carrying a purse, the diaper bag and, you know, I’m standing on the corner like, ‘Wait.’ She’s rocking being all the alpha that she is,” he said. “I believe she needs a dude like that, I’m just not that dude.”
Mariah echoed this sentiment in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, where she wrote: “Honestly, I think Nick and I could have worked it out between the two of us, but egos and emotions got inflamed (which can translate into many billable lawyer hours, and ultimately it did).”
Since his split from Mariah, Nick has infamously welcomed ten more children with five different women.
He shares 7-year-old Golden Sagon, 4-year-old Powerful Queen, and 2-year-old Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell, 3-year-old twins Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, and 2-year-old Beautiful Zeppelin with Abby De La Rosa, 2-year-old Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi, 2-year-old Onyx Ice Cole with LaNisha Cole, and 23-month-old Halo Marie with Alyssa Scott.
Nick and Alyssa are also mom and dad to their son Zen, who was born in June 2021 and diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer at two months old. Zen tragically died at just five months old in December 2021.
Selling Sunset star Bre recently praised Nick for being a “good and present” father to their son, telling Entertainment Tonight that he works his schedule around his kids.
"He manages it really well. I feel like that's why no one ever hears anything; because we're all happy. We all make it work," she said at the time. “He's such a good person, genuinely, and he really cares, and he does want to be there, and he's never gonna blow anything off."
“He is a great father. I don't know why people give him such a hard time, like, if there's anything that man genuinely cares about, it's being a good and present dad, and he makes it work,” she went on.
"Nick is very good at accommodating whatever is requested," Bre concluded. “He's very present; anything I ask for, he's there. Any like milestones or photo shoots or anything. I try to always accommodate him as well, because he is very busy, and he does have multiple productions and everything else."
And Nick revealed that he was planning to spend time with all of his children over Thanksgiving, as he admitted to People that the day “is very complicated.”
“I’m a busy man on Thanksgiving,” he said. “I’m going to be full by the end of the day, but everybody specializes in certain things, you know what I mean? Some people got good sweet potato pie, some people got amazing fried turkey. So I know every house that needs to have the things that I really like."
