Eating Out On Mother's Day

If you've waited until now to make Mother's Day reservations, you may have a hard time getting a seat at her favorite restaurant. Mother's Day is one of the most popular days of the year to dine out, with many restaurants offering specialty brunches and meals for the occasion.

If you do dine out on May 13, consider the following tips to help keep your diet on track:

  • Load up on fruits and veggies at the buffet. Remember that most buffets offer as many healthy foods as they do ones that are high in fat and calories. Try to fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, and take only small portions of items you can't resist trying.

  • Split it. Most portions offered in American eateries are much larger than what's recommended as a reasonable serving. Consider splitting an entré from the menu with a friend or family member, or else order an appetizer as your main course.

  • Walk it off. After the meal, why not take the family out for a walk or leisurely hike? It will provide a good opportunity for Mom to talk with everyone and everyone will burn off some calories in the process.

  • Make dessert low fat. If you are going to indulge in dessert, consider a high-calcium and low-fat option such as low-fat frozen yogurt.
