Harvey Nichols Unveils First Creative Vision Under Kate Phelan’s Creative Direction

LONDON — Things are moving fast at Harvey Nichols as the luxury retailer aims to rebuild itself.

Kate Phelan, the British stylist and editor who was named creative director last November, has unveiled her first creative vision for the department store via its window displays.

She invited illustrator Jacky Marshall, otherwise known as Jacky Blue, to line draw colorful silhouettes of gowns and coats.

“I had discovered one of Jacky’s illustrations of a Marc Jacob’s show a few seasons ago and had been quietly obsessed with it. It was abstract and powerful, and I found that I was still captivated by her unique sense of color and the refreshing nature of her work,” Phelan said.

“The concept for the campaign really began by considering what would be impactful, but also unexpected and surprising. I wanted it to be mindful of Harvey Nichols’ unique heritage, whilst representing a fresh new beginning,” she added, explaining that she wanted the imagery to work across a number of different mediums.

One of the illustrations features blue suit with an orange-hued coat, while another is of a long red dress.

As reported, the appointment of Phelan at Harvey Nichols is one of the first major moves by new chief executive officer Julia Goddard, who joined the retailer last year.

“Kate’s esteemed career in the fashion industry has been captivating, and her expertise will strengthen the leadership team at Harvey Nichols,” Goddard said.

“Her renowned experience will be instrumental in driving Harvey Nichols forward to establish itself as the go-to brand for well-curated luxury fashion, delivering quality growth and successfully celebrating our brand’s unique DNA. I am very excited to see her creativity and vision come to life,” Goddard added.
