“Grey's Anatomy”: Mika's Fate Is Revealed, Schmitt Takes a Leap of Faith and Teddy Gets a Second Chance
Mika and her sister Chloe's lives hung in the balance following their car accident as Schmitt got ready to say goodbye on 'Grey's Anatomy'
This post contains spoilers from the Thursday, Nov. 14 episode of Grey's Anatomy.
It was a night of heartbreaking goodbyes on Grey’s Anatomy.
The episode picked up after last week’s cliffhanger, which left the lives of Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) and her sister Chloe (Julia Rose) hanging in the balance. The doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial raced to save them but ultimately, only one sister survived the accident.
Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) faced the reality of leaving the hospital for a new position in Texas. While he struggled to say goodbye to Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), he took a leap of faith when it came to a new relationship with James (Michael Thomas Grant).
Sisterly Love and Loss
The doctors were shocked when Mika and her sister Chloe arrived at the hospital after their car accident. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) and Ben Warren (Jason George) all raced to help them.
When Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) wanted to jump to help, Mika desperately told him, “Go, take care of Chloe, please” before her stats began to drop and they quickly realized she was suffering from a liver herniation.
Bailey demanded that Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane), Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) and Benson "Blue" Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) stay away from the trauma bay but Jules panicked.
Outside the hospital, Jules blamed herself for the accident after Mika helped her and she scrubbed in for surgery amid her sister’s cancer treatment. When Blue told her not to think that way, she snapped, “Our friend is fighting for her life in there and there’s nothing we can do about it. I know that might not matter to you and your stone heart but it matters to me.”
After the outburst, Jules revealed to Simone that she and Mika are more than friends but struggled with defining their relationship, saying, “What do you call it when you flirt with someone and sometimes you kiss and you want to be together, but her sister gets sick, and you work together?”
Simone responded that it was “complicated” between the pair. Jules later confided in her, sharing, “I’ve never had a relationship that feels like this. Easy and electric, and I think we’re both scared of messing it up.”
“Mika is not going down without a fight, especially if she has you to fight for,” Simone responded.
Meanwhile, the doctors argued over the best approach to take with Mika’s care but Bailey reminded them, “This is one of our own lying on this table, but she needs to stop arguing and save her life” before coming up with a game plan to save her.
The doctors also diagnosed Chloe with acute compartment syndrome, which is a buildup of pressure in a muscle compartment.
During surgery, Chloe had a bad vascular bleed and was at risk of losing her leg. The interns heard them call a “code blue” for her and raced to save her. However, it was too late and Lucas called her time of death.
When Mika woke up from surgery, she immediately asked about Chloe. Bailey shook her head and Mika repeatedly said “no” before breaking down in tears.
A Fond Farewell
As Schmitt prepared for his last day at Grey Sloan Memorial, he and James pondered when they would see each other next while lying in bed together.
“Texas is feeling really far away right now,” Schmitt told his boyfriend of moving away for his new research position.
While in the nursery, Schmitt fretted over making his relationship with James long distance to Jo, saying, “I haven’t even moved yet and it’s already hard.”
After Jo said she was “tired and hormonal” from her pregnancy, Schmitt responded, “I don’t know what I would have done all these years without you.”
While she was initially hesitant to give him relationship advice, Jo later opened up about her own experience, saying, “Long distance is awful. It’s expensive and lonely and I would never recommend it but you are committed to making it work, it will.”
After their conversation, Schmitt asked James to move to San Antonio with him but James was hesitant. “My whole life is here. My job. I just bought my loft.”
“I’m falling in love with you,” Schmitt interrupted. “I’m sorry to put you on the spot like this. You don’t have to decide this second. You don’t even have to decide today, just think about it.”
However, his offer initially goes unanswered as James said they should discuss it later.
Before leaving the hospital, Jo has another heart-to-heart with Schmitt. She called having sex with him “the best mistake I ever made”, referring to their one-night stand in season 14, and then asked him to become a godfather to the twins she’s expecting.
“The world is a hardened place full of hardened people, but you, you walk through life with this giant, open heart,” she said.
As Schmitt left, a series of flashbacks from his time at Grey Sloan were shown before James came to find him.
James then informed Schmitt that he had resigned from his job and was ready to move to Texas with him. The pair then kissed and Schmitt said, “Let’s go together!”
Finding Acceptance
Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) was still struggling to come to terms with Teddy Altman’s (Kim Raver) explanation of her kiss with Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush), a trauma surgeon at Seattle Presbyterian.
“You let someone kiss when we’re supposed to be working on our marriage,” he coldly told her. “I think I know enough.”
Owen later admitted that he “overreacted,” adding, “It was a mistake and you told me right away. You did nothing wrong.”
