“Goonies ”Star“ ”Martha Plimpton Denies a Sequel Is in the Works: The Reports Are 'Not Real'
Both Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman have denied a report that Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a sequel to the 1985 cult classic 'The Goonies'
Martha Plimpton is setting the record straight.
After The Sun published a report on Sept. 6 that the 1985 movie The Goonies is getting a sequel in development at Warner Bros., Plimpton — who played Stephanie "Stef" Steinbrenner in the original movie — took to Instagram to deny the rumor outright.
"People, there is no Goonies2 script, there is no one 'attached,' Spielberg is not directing, it's not real," Plimpton, 53, wrote in an all-text post she shared on Friday, Sept. 13. With fans' attention drawn to her post confirming a sequel is not in development, she instead urged followers to keep their focus on the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
"What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!" she added in her statement.
Plimpton is not the only Goonies cast member to publicly note they have not heard anything about starring in a sequel. Corey Feldman, who played Clark "Mouth" Devereaux in the movie,
wrote on X on Sept. 10 that he did not know anything about a potential sequel either.
"2'SDAY, IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERY1 IS ASKING... I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORKX," Feldman, 53, wrote, while otherwise promoting an upcoming 20th anniversary release of his 2004 movie The Birthday.

The Goonies, directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus based on a story created by Steven Spielberg, also costarred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, John Matuszak and Joe Pantoliano. The movie follows a group of children and teenagers living in Oregon who go on an adventure to find lost treasure they believe will help their parents avoid foreclosure on their homes.

Attempts have been made to create a sequel or otherwise revitalize The Goonies over the years. Donner, who died in 2021 at 91 years old, announced in 2014 that he intended on making a sequel with the film's original cast, but Spielberg, 77, said during a 2020 Zoom reunion with the filmmaker and cast that they never ideated a quality idea to take into production, per Deadline.
“Chris, Dick and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it,” he said at the time. “Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.”
At least one cast member has expressed interest in participating in a sequel in recent years. In January 2023, Quan, 53, said he would be interested in reviving the movie while accepting the award for best supporting actor in a motion picture at the Golden Globe Awards.
"Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship [director Richard Donner], who I love dearly, and I really don't know if there will be Goonies 2, but I would be open to reliving that character if there is that opportunity," Quan said at the time.
