President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. government to start calling the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America"

Google Maps will soon change "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America," the tech company revealed on Monday evening.

The imminent map update comes in response to President Donald Trump's Day One executive order for the government to stop calling the body of water by its original name, instead suggesting that it should be named after the United States because it played a "pivotal role in shaping America's future and the global economy."

Trump's left-field decision to focus on maps during his first day in office was met with criticism, both domestically and abroad.

In a post on X, Google addressed its plan to comply with Trump's executive order, citing a "longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources" — which is based on updates to the Geographic Names Information System.

"Also longstanding practice: When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name," the post read. "Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too."

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum previously assured her constituents that Mexico would pay no attention to Trump's new guidance on what to call the gulf.

"He says that he will call it the 'Gulf of America' on its continental shelf. For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico," Sheinbaum, 62, said on Tuesday, Jan. 21, per the Associated Press.
