The women of The Golden Bachelor were as surprised as we were that Gerry is only picking three of them for hometown dates this season.
Normally on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the star chooses four of their remaining contenders for hometown dates, flying to visit them in their hometowns and meet their families. But in this Thursday’s episode, host Jesse Palmer informed the six remaining ladies that only three of them would make it through to hometowns. So why the change?

It was a simple matter of time, as ABC’s senior vice president of alternative series Robert Mills explained on social media: “The worst part of this was the ladies thought there were 4 hometowns and due to the 1 hour format we could only do 3.” The Bachelor and The Bachelorette episodes usually run two hours, but the current inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor is merely an hour long each week, so they didn’t have time to feature a fourth hometown date.
That format tweak spelled heartbreak for Ellen, who seemed like a top contender for Gerry’s heart but was sent home last night along with Sandra and Susan. (Check out our full recap here for all the details.) Gerry will join his three remaining women — Leslie, Faith and Theresa — for hometown dates in next Thursday’s episode (ABC, 8/7c).
