Girlfriend of Washington, D.C. Man Found Dead in 1990 Now Charged with His Murder

The Metropolitan Police Department's homicide branch announced the arrest of Sheila Brown on the 34th anniversary of Norman Rich's murder

A Maryland woman whose boyfriend was found fatally shot in their home 34 years ago has been charged with his killing.

Sheila Brown, 66, is accused of the March 28, 1990 death of 34-year-old Norman Rich. The Metropolitan Police Department's homicide branch announced the arrest on Thursday — the 34th anniversary of his murder.

Brown was indicted on charges of murder in the second degree and obstruction of justice. Police said the killing was “domestic in nature.”

Officers were called to their home in the Northeast part of D.C. on March 28, 1990.

Brown, who was 32 at the time, allegedly told police that she was leaving to run errands when two men stopped by asking for Rich, WTOP-TV reported. When she returned home, she found Rich dead inside their bedroom, per the outlet.

“She was on the scene,” Metropolitan police inspector Kevin Kentish of the homicide division said at a press conference Thursday. “She was interviewed at the time of the offense. However, charges were not brought forward. It was yesterday that charges were filed.”

“There were multiple conversations with her over the past 30 years,” he said.

“This was a great case brought together by a cold case unit,” said Kentish. “Our major case detectives, they never stopped looking at cases. So, what this was, was a case of looking at a case, reevaluating, looking at all the evidence, looking at witness statements, and being able to find certain intricacies in the case that would lead to the closure.”

“In this case, there were certain things that were present now that were not present in 1990,” he said. “As far as DNA, witness statements, there's certain stuff that we have now that we didn't have back then that assisted us in being able to look at this case a little differently.”

Brown was arrested Wednesday on a bench warrant by members of the Annapolis Police Department and the United States Marshals Service.

A hearing is scheduled for June 28, per the Washington Post.
