Meshel Laurie: 'Georgie Gardner saved my life'

Meshel Laurie has spoken out about the moment Georgie Gardner stepped in and saved her life.

A regular panellist on The Project, Meshel spoke candidly on podcast TV Blackbox recently about how the TV personality - who she didn’t know at the time - was a good samaritan in her time of need.

Describing an evening when online abuse became overwhelming, Meshel revealed that she began sharing her feelings of frustration online, prompting Georgie to reach out.

The 45-year-old opened up about the fact that she was struggling with suicidal thought and feelings at the time, making the message that much more important.

“She was really kind and she was just saying... ‘Switch off, mate. Let it go, get some sleep, tomorrow's another day’ sort of thing,” she said.

“And I did. I just switched it off, I put it down.”

She said the gesture stood out in a space where she was feeling virtually no support.

“I had so many real friends who were not stepping in for me, were not contacting me… and still haven’t,” she said.

When quizzed about the impact of the message, Meshel admitted that given her headspace at the time, Georgie really did potentially save her life.

She also insisted the gesture wasn’t part of an ongoing friendship, just a friendly message from a stranger at exactly the right time.

“I haven't spoken to her again,” she revealed.

Georgie has been the subject of some controversy this year after she replaced Lisa Wilkinson on the Today show, which then lost its entire original line up.

Despite her denial of any bad blood over the changes, Gardner has been the subject of rift rumours for months.

It’s in light of this that Laurie chose to speak up.

“I sometimes see things in the media... and I think, ‘I must try and find a way to tell the world that she's a really nice person’,” she revealed.

Laurie has always been candid when it comes to her experiences and opinions.

She’s spoken openly about her struggles with IVF which culminated in her divorce, and the difficulty of life as a single, pregnant woman.
