HBO has issued a hilarious response to the Game of Thrones editing blunder that saw a takeaway coffee cup make the final cut for episode four.

Fans spotted the paper cup sitting next to Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys in a scene which also featured Kit Harington in his role of Jon Snow.

Responding to the massive reaction in the spirit of the gaffe, HBO said, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

Meanwhile, the show’s art director Hauke Richter told Variety, “Things can get forgotten on set... [the gaffe has been] so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.”

Fans were quick to point out the anachronism, hilariously poking fun at the multi-million dollar production’s mishap.

“Starbucks is apparently in Westeros,” wrote one user.

Another detailed how the show’s themes had deterred them so far from watching the show, but she was happy residents now had widespread access to caffeine.

While some initially questioned the blunder’s legitimacy, these feelings were debunked when one user post a recording of its feature in the series’ latest episode.

And although the fail marks the first time a thoroughly modern coffee cup made it to fans’ screens there was another close call in season one.

Back in 2014, a photo circulated showing Jamie Lannister holding a coffee cup at the Purple Wedding, but the shot was later revealed to be from a behind-the-scenes video.
