1. Invest in the new season

You need to acknowledge the change in season. Headwear is always a must at the races and traditionally autumn calls for heavier wool or felt fabrications, offering warmth and style in the cooler months. Structured hats or headpieces are once again on trend this season, embellished with different metals and accessories.

2. Tips for the boys

Men should embrace the cooler weather and opt for a roll-neck woolen knit under a well-cut suit. Head to the track prepared with an umbrella to top off the autumn look, they’re not only fabulously stylish but super practical.

3. Don’t overdo it

From the hair, to the make up, fake tan, and your accessories – less is more when it comes to autumn racing style. Keep your hair and make-up simple and elegant, looking to this season’s warmer tones over summer bright. Accessory wise, opt for one statement piece – such as a vintage brooch or chic cuff – is enough.

4. Think classy

Autumn racing is the perfect time to wear a tailored, structured dress or suit. As a general rule of thumb anything appropriate in a nightclub is not ok at the track! Skirts should be just above or below the knee and midriff or sequins need to be left at home. Closed-toe pumps or chic ankle-length boots are the perfect footwear to complete an autumn racing outfit. Ladies, don’t be shy to find a fab pair of gloves or an interesting pair of stockings to keep you warm in the stand.

5. Distinguished gentlemen

For the men, a lapel flower, a pocket square and a tie pin offer a classy Don Draper-esque touch. A well-tailored suit is a must to help you really look the part. And don’t forget: make sure you finish the look with matching socks.

6. Colour Is King

A strong pop of colour is always appropriate at the races. Colour is also the best way to brighten up what can often be a cold, autumn day. This style rule applies to the guys as much as it does for the girls. Gents, think navy blue suit or a brightly tie or pocket square. And ladies, don’t be afraid to mix patterns with colours.

7. Do not take your shoes off. Ever.

This is more of a rule than a racing style tip. Choose your shoes wisely, taking into consideration you will be in them all day. The weather might be wet and you may also have to trek across a paddock at some stage during the day. Top tip: add a pair of compact flats like Jiffies to your handbag if need be – but even these should not be pulled out until you have well and truly left the racecourse.
